KISORO – A family in Muko Village, Nyabwishenya Sub-county in Kisoro District, is living in fear following the disappearance of their 61-year-old father, Iyamuremye Jack, who reportedly crossed into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to check on his cattle.

Iyamuremye reportedly crossed into Congo on Friday, October 2, 2026, after receiving information from relatives grazing his cattle that authorities had impounded the animals and wanted him to confirm ownership, according to his son, Jonan Byiringiro

However, he has not returned home since, leaving his family worried about his safety as his whereabouts remain unknown more than ten days later.

“My father was informed by our relatives who were grazing his cows in the DRC that the animals had been impounded and that he needed to cross over to confirm whether they belonged to him,” Byiringiro said,

Byiringiro suspects their father could have been abducted by an armed group reportedly operating in the area where his cattle were grazing.

The family has appealed to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to intervene and help establish their father’s whereabouts.

“Our father was the one supporting the family. We are worried about his safety and are appealing to the President and the government to help us find him,”

Muko Village LC1 Chairperson David Surugumwe confirmed Iyamuremye’s disappearance.

Surugumwe said he initially expected Jack to return home and therefore delayed reporting the matter to the authorities.

The village chairperson also recalled a similar incident about five years ago, when another person was reportedly kidnapped from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“Something similar happened about five years ago when another person was reportedly kidnapped from the DRC. This incident has increased our concern about the safety of people crossing into the neighbouring country,”

Surugumwe added that the Iyamuremye’s disappearance was a community concern.

“This matter is beyond what we can handle as a community. We are appealing to the government to intervene urgently and help establish where Jack is,”
