KABALE – Police in Kabale District have arrested eight Senior Four students of Kigezi High School for allegedly inciting violence during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

SP Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, said the suspects were being held at Kabale Central Police Station as investigations continued.

The arrests follow a mini-strike at the school, during which windowpanes and a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera were reportedly destroyed.

Tumushime said police responded swiftly to the incident and were pursuing other suspects.

“We responded swiftly to the incident, and further arrests are underway,” Tumushime said.

He added that police had maintained their deployment at the school to restore order and prevent further incidents.

“We have maintained our deployment at the school to ensure that order is restored and that no further incidents occur,” he said.

Tumushime described the students involved in the strike as a small group of troublemakers whose actions should not be allowed to disrupt learning for other students, particularly during the ongoing national examinations.

“The actions of a small group of troublemakers should not be allowed to disrupt learning for other students,” he said.

Meanwhile, the school headteacher, Abraham Akampurira, said the arrested students were among 11 learners suspended on Monday after they were allegedly caught attempting to escape from the school over the weekend.

Akampurira said the students appeared before the school disciplinary committee, which resolved to suspend them.

“The students were summoned before the school disciplinary committee, which considered the matter and resolved to suspend them,” Akampurira said.

He alleged that the suspended students later returned to the school and attempted to disrupt its operations, mainly targeting security guards.

“After their suspension, they returned to the school and attempted to destabilise its operations, particularly by targeting the security guards,” he said.
