Residents of Kogorogoro Village, Mutungo Parish, Nyakishana Sub-County, Buhweju district on Sunday woke up to disturbing news of their neighbours who were crushed by a rolling stone on Sunday.

SP. Tayebwa Apollo, the Regional Police Public Relations Officer for Greater Bushenyi on Sunday identified the couple as Gumisiriza Deus, aged 40 years, and his wife, Nyamwiza Evalyne, who lost their lives after stones rolled over their house and killed them.

“Following earth tremors in the area, two large stones rolled down from a nearby hill into the valley and crashed through the roof of the couple’s semi-permanent house, landing on their bed and killing them instantly while they were asleep,” Tayebwa told the press, terming the incident a ‘natural disaster.’

Tayebwa said that police responded promptly to the scene and found the victims already lifeless, but “the scene was processed and documented in accordance with the standard operating procedures.”

The couple’s six children, who were also in the same house at the time of the incident, were not injured.

Postmortem examinations were conducted, and the results indicated that the female victim sustained fatal chest injuries. In contrast, the male victim suffered severe abdominal injuries and an open compound fracture of the left arm.

Further police findings at the scene revealed that the stones had previously been interfered with due to digging activities around them, which made them loose and susceptible to rolling downhill during the earthquakes.

The bodies were handed over to the relatives for burial as investigations into the matter continue.

The police mouthpiece cautioned the general public, especially residents living in hilly and mountainous areas, to avoid destabilising large rocks and to remain vigilant during periods of earthquakes and heavy rains.
