MBARARA – At some point in life, any society has decried being led by a wrong leader, especially in the political sphere. But how do people go to the polls and elect the wrong individuals into positions of leadership?
On Sunday, 1st February, while speaking to a congregation at St. James Cathedral, Ruharo, the headquarters of Ankole diocese, the Rt. Rev. Associate Prof. Sheldon Mwesigwa expressed how bad it is for people to sit and elect the wrong people into positions, citing an example of the ongoing electoral process in which some wrong people were elected.
The Bishop’s remarks were in reference to the ongoing election process in the Church of Uganda, where Christians are selecting individuals to represent them on different church councils.
“We want to congratulate those who are being elected to different positions for church councils because we are in the period of choosing people who will comprise the next synod. Our Church of Uganda is governed by church councils, synod and other organs. So, you take this very seriously and make sure that you participate. We don’t want you to be like in some politics where some wrong people were sent.” Bishop Mwesigwa said
“It is very clear. In some places, you see someone who has been sent, and you wonder why. I hope the church will be different.” He added
The Bishop urged his flock to elect people with integrity and ideas, noting that electing the right people is “the reason why our diocese has succeeded in many ways.”
“Once you elect the rightful people, you get rightful results. The moment you elect the wrong people, you get the wrong results.”
Acknowledging that the English service at the cathedral has progressed well as compared to the past, the bishop said: “The English service never used to be that strong at all, so we thank God that it has progressed and is growing, and it will grow bigger. We give thanks to God for that.”
Bishop Mwesigwa also congratulated the primary seven candidates for completing their exams and getting good results, saying that his diocese doesn’t have any situation where results were withheld.
“The results are being compiled, and they are in line with what has been happening, in line with the trend that has been. In fact, this year will be much better than the others before, but that is inevitable because it has been progressing. We thank God that our schools continue to do well.”
The Bishop observed that cheating is very high across the Country, but explained that Ankole Diocese has always put stringent measures to avoid any cases of examination malpractices.
“Some papers from last year’s PLE leaked even before exams were done. When you have a school like Mbarara Junior. For them, whether exams have leaked or not, nobody is going to get access to those leaked exams because when the exam period starts, the head teacher sends away all these teachers. After all, some teachers can be tempted.” Bishop Mwesigwa clarified, adding, “There is a school around. When the results came, there was someone who knew the candidates. So, when he looked at the results and the kid who got 04 aggregates, he said that “this kid comes from my village. He cannot make two sentences in English correctly, but he has 04 aggregates.”
He informed the congregation that the diocese is making an investigation into schools where there might be people who are being tempted to cheat.
“And we shall get them because we follow students where they go. In Ankole diocese, where anybody tries that, they know what to expect. I don’t expect they will be there.”
He urged parents to take their children to Christian schools where there is no cheating.
