Arsenal FC on Saturday evening swatted away the pressure of last week’s defeat to Manchester United at Emirates as they gambolled to a comfortable 4–0 win away at the home of Leeds United.
26-year-old Spanish midfielder, Martín Zubimendi, headed his side ahead midstream through the first half, before Karl Darlow’s baffling own goal plugged off a dominant opening period for the Premier League leaders.
The usual stubborn Leeds threatened to get a grip on proceedings after the restart, but Arsenal marshalled the game with real class, and Viktor Gyökeres and Gabriel Jesus both netted in the final 20 minutes to kick away doubt about the final result.
Mikel Arteta’s side shook off the dust in response to last week’s disappointing defeat to Manchester United.
Noni Madueke’s cross set up Martín Zubimendi’s opener, and a corner proved too tricky for Leeds’ Karl Darlow to handle soon after. Adding Noni to the squad must have paid off Arteta’s efforts of getting him from Chelsea.
Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who is known for causing problems for several Premier League defenders this season, had a bad evening as Gabriel gave him no chance.
The Brazilian defender led the game in successful clashes and helped ensure Leeds never got into the game. Any challenge by Leeds would have thumped the Gunners, some distance behind in the title race.
Bukayo Saka, initially billed as a starter, picked up an injury in the warm-up, which forced him out of the showdown at Leeds. Arsenal, however, now face an edgy wait to determine the nastiness of his setback. Arterta’s desk hopes an in-form Madueke will be available to cover the gap, though.
Arsenal now remain on top of the English Premier League, with 53 points, as Manchester City follows in the second position with 46 points before playing their 24th game against Tottenham on Sunday.
