The journey to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 officially began with CAF President Patrice Motsepe handing over the CAF flag to the East African host nations of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, marking a historic milestone for the region.
The symbolic ceremony signalled the formal transfer of hosting duties to East Africa, which will stage the tournament under the theme “Pamoja”, a Swahili word meaning together—symbolising unity, cooperation, and a shared regional vision.
Addressing guests at the event, Motsepe commended the joint bid and expressed confidence in the region’s ability to successfully host the continent’s premier football tournament.
“AFCON 2027 is about more than football. It is about unity, development, and showcasing Africa’s diversity and potential to the world,” Motsepe said, noting that East Africa has shown strong commitment and readiness.
The handover comes as Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda ramp up preparations, including upgrading stadiums, enhancing transport infrastructure, strengthening security arrangements, and expanding hospitality facilities. Governments and football associations across the three countries have reaffirmed their commitment to meeting CAF requirements ahead of the tournament.
Officials from the host nations described the occasion as a landmark moment not only for football but also for regional integration and economic development.
“This is a proud moment for East Africa. Hosting AFCON together reflects our shared vision and regional cooperation,” said Eng. Moses Magogo, President of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA).
Uganda was represented at the ceremony by State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang and Eng. Moses Magogo, who both appeared on the podium during the handover.
AFCON 2027 will be the first edition of the tournament to be jointly hosted by three East African countries, reinforcing CAF’s commitment to inclusivity and regional collaboration. The competition is expected to boost tourism, create employment opportunities, and inspire a new generation of football talent across the region.
As the CAF flag now rests in East Africa, excitement continues to build. Guided by the spirit of Pamoja, the region is determined to deliver a memorable tournament that celebrates African football, culture, and unity on the continental stage.
