Ruhija Seed School decry delayed salaries

RUBANDA – A section of teachers at Ruhija Seed School in Rubanda district have expressed frustration over delayed and missing salaries, with several staff members claiming they have gone months without any pay since being posted to the school.

A source familiar with the situation at the school told Tayari News that a total of 31 teachers and support staff were deployed to the school in September 2025, but none of them received salaries for the first three months—September, October, and November 2025.

The source further revealed that although 21 of the staff received a salary for December, four employees say they have not received any salary at all since they were posted to the school.

Affected individuals include Shallon Akankunda, the school librarian, Sarah Murungi, the secretary, Agaba Julius, a teacher of Agriculture, and Amos Baramye, who reportedly received only the December salary but has not been paid again since then.

Akankunda said the situation has placed her under serious financial strain as she continues reporting to work without pay.

“I spend about 40,000 shillings every day on transport to reach school, yet I have never received any salary since I was posted here,” Akankunda said.

Another teacher, Benson Ainembabazi, a science teacher at the school, said his payments have also been inconsistent.

“I started receiving my salary in December and I also got my full pay for January. But in February I was surprised to find that I had been paid on the humanities teachers’ salary scale instead of the science scale,” Ainembabazi said.

The affected teachers say they have repeatedly reported the matter to officials at Rubanda District Local Government but claim they have not received any clear explanation or assistance.

When contacted for a comment, the District Human Resources Officer, Joshua Mbitse declined to address the matter and instead referred the inquiry to the District Chief Administrative Officer.

However, Samuel Ahabwe said he was not aware of the issue.

“I am not aware of the matter. Maybe the teachers decided to approach the radio because they believe using a public platform can help them get a quicker response,” Ahabwe said.

The teachers are now calling on district authorities and the Ministry of Education to urgently intervene and resolve the salary discrepancies affecting staff at Ruhija Seed School.
