PLU endorses Among, Tayebwa for 12th Parliament Speakership

KAMPALA –  The establishment at Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has on Wednesday announced they will support the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and her Deputy, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa as Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively, for Parliament’s top position in the 12th Parliament.

In the March 11th statement released by the PLU Secretary General, Hon. David Kabanda, the group asked PLU-leaning Members of Parliament-elects to rally behind Among and Tayebwa. 

Urging the recently elected leaders to uphold principles dear to the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), which include patriotism, integrity, transformation and Socio-Economic Development, the Secretary General congratulated them upon being elected. 

“Congratulations on your successful election to the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Uganda. Your victory reflects the trust and confidence that your electorate has in your abilities and competencies.” 

Hon. Kabanda told his team that the PLU boss, Gen. Kainerugaba, guided that the MP-elects support the candidates picked by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee. 

“In the spirit of ‘Tuko Pamoja, ‘ the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Gen. Muhoozi Keinerugaba, has guided that all PLU-leaning Honourable Members Elect should support the candidates who have been endorsed by the
Central Executive Committee of the NRM, i.e. Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among and Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker, respectively, for the 12th Parliament of the Republic of Uganda,” the statement read

He explained that the “decision has been informed by the Tuko Pamoja principle and duo’s experience and commitment in guiding Parliamentary Debate and steering the legislature.”

Kabanda appealed to the MP-elects to “maintain decorum, dignity and discipline during the selection process of these important leaders.”

Speaker Among hailed PLU for being on the same page with the NRM. 

“I express my sincere gratitude to my brother, our esteemed Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for endorsing and agreeing with the decision of the NRM CEC regarding the House leadership. Tuko Pamoja!” Among said via her X account.

Grateful to PLU for the move, Tayebwa said, “Thank you, our generational leader, for the support and guidance as communicated by our able Secretary General”

PLU’s communication comes days after President Museveni, who is the NRM Chairperson, told the ruling NRM parliamentary Caucus to support incumbent Among and Tayebwa for another term of five years. President Museveni reportedly informed NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong that the party’s Central Executive Committee (CEC), during its February 20 sitting, had agreed to extend the term of Among and Tayebwa.

Among and Tayebwa were endorsed by the NRM CEC on January 28th for another five-year term (2026-2031).
