The Rotary Club of Kabale Central on Friday 5th June commissioned a renovated water spring and planted several trees at Kigezi High School Primary School in Kabale Municipality as part of activities to commemorate World Environment Day.

World Environment Day is celebrated annually on June 5th to raise awareness about environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources.

This year’s celebrations were being observed under the theme, “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future,” which calls on communities to embrace nature-based solutions in addressing environmental challenges and climate change.

Speaking as the chief guest, Kabale Deputy Resident Commissioner Michael Muramira Kyakashari commended the Rotary Club of Kabale Central for supporting environmental conservation and improving access to clean water.

“We appreciate the Rotary Club of Kabale Central for this noble initiative. Access to clean water and environmental conservation are critical for the well-being of our communities,” Kyakashari said.

He urged the school administration to ensure proper maintenance of the renovated spring and the newly planted trees.

“Many good projects fail because of poor maintenance. I encourage the school management to put in place measures to protect these trees and maintain the water source so that future generations can continue benefiting from them,” he added.

Kyakashari also challenged learners to become champions of environmental protection.

“Every learner should become an ambassador for environmental conservation by planting trees and promoting good environmental practices both at school and at home,” he said.

Kabale Municipal Deputy Mayor Kedress Mutabazi emphasized the importance of environmental conservation.

“When we protect the environment, we are protecting our lives and livelihoods. Environmental degradation has contributed to droughts, floods, soil erosion, and unpredictable weather patterns that continue to affect our communities,” Mutabazi noted.

The Past President of the Rotary Club of Kabale Central, Jimmy Musiime, said the activities reflected the club’s commitment to community service and environmental sustainability.

“This tree-planting exercise is intended to instill environmental awareness among young people and encourage them to become responsible custodians of natural resources,” Musiime said.

He added, “Trees play a vital role in combating climate change. They absorb carbon dioxide, prevent soil erosion, reduce flooding, and improve air quality. That is why every member of the community has a responsibility to protect and plant more trees.”

Musiime further called for collective action in environmental protection.

“Environmental conservation should not be left to government and environmental organizations alone. It is a responsibility that belongs to all of us,” he said.

The Head Teacher of Kigezi High School Primary School, Geofrey Beinomugisha, welcomed the intervention and pledged proper management of the projects.

“The renovated spring comes at a time when the school has been facing challenges of water scarcity. It will greatly improve access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene for our learners and staff,” Beinomugisha said.

He added, “We are committed to maintaining the water source and ensuring that all the trees planted today are protected and nurtured to maturity.”
