BUSHENYI – The Minister of State for Public Service, Grace Mary Mugasa, has warned Women against disrespecting their husbands after gaining financial power. According to Minister Mugasa, some women use their financial muscle to express contempt over their husbands, one of the reasons why domestic violence has increased, and marriages are breaking up.

The Minister was speaking at the belated International Women’s Day celebrations in Bushenyi District held at Kakanju playground, Igara West County, where she was the chief guest on Friday, 24th April.

“If God has given you money, respect your husband and submit to him even if you are richer than him. A man remains a man. Don’t ask him to prove that he is a man. Some of you think that when a man doesn’t have money, he is not man enough. He is still a man because you know what makes up a man.” Said Mugasa

“Some of you start seeing your husbands’ weaknesses just because you have money in your pocket. Why didn’t you see those weaknesses when you were still poor? Team up with your man and work to develop. When you get more money and start despising your husband, he will fight back. This also applies to men. Don’t get money and start undermining your wife because she will also fire back, and your marriage will be no more.”

The event was held under the theme, “Scaling Up Investment to Accelerate Access to Justice for All Women and Girls in Uganda.”

Minister Mugasa also, when delivering her speech, condemned corruption in the recruitment of civil servants.

“Parents have taken their children to school. Some have sold their land to invest in the education of their children, and they have passed their exams well, but after graduating, they are asked to pay money for jobs. Government jobs are not for sale.” Said Mugasa

“There is no supermarket for government jobs. Jobs should be given on merit so that we can get quality workers in the district. The people selling jobs include district leaders including technical staff and councillors. They collude and eat people’s money.” She added

The Minister’s remarks come at the heels of bribery claims surrounding the recruitment of public servants in Bushenyi district, a development that has attracted the attention of the Public Service Commission and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

Appreciating President Yoweri Museveni’s contribution in uplifting women by giving them key leadership positions and supporting their welfare, the Bushenyi district Woman Member of Parliament, Annet Katusiime Mugisha called for combined efforts in empowering the boy child, who has been left behind.

“Bushenyi is well known for promoting women and especially providing education to girl children, but now we have a challenge of the boy child being neglected. We have heard many people talking about how the boy child has been left behind. Let us create spaces where the boy child can be empowered.”

The Bushenyi district Women’s council chairperson, Yudaya Nakanwagi Mwesigye asked the government to provide facilitation for women’s council activities especially in terms of transport. Nakanwagi’s remarks were reechoed by the Bushenyi district Chairperson, Jafari Basajabalaba who said that women councils across the country struggled to organsie their annual celebrations due to lack of resources.

“Here, the government managed to raise only 3 million and to be sincere, this money is too little. Women’s Day celebrations were gazetted, and that’s okay, but let the women be fully facilitated to celebrate their day. This is once a year, and their time to come and express themselves.” Said Basajabalaba

Minister Mugasa handed over medical equipment worth 59.1 million shillings to selected government health facilities to address inadequacies, and also commissioned a water distribution network for the 11.8 billion National Water and Sewerage Corporation Warugo Water project.
