KABALE – Road users along the Kabale–Mparo road in Kabale District have raised concern over the worsening condition of the road, saying it is disrupting business activities and hindering the transportation of agricultural produce.
The road, which connects Kabale to Rukiga District through Rukyiri, is reportedly in a critical state. Several sections have become nearly impassable, especially during the rainy season, leaving residents and transporters stranded.
Residents who spoke to this reporter described the road as hazardous and unreliable. Stephen Twinamasiko, a boda boda rider, said the poor condition of the road has significantly affected his daily income.
“This road is full of potholes and mud. During the rainy season, it becomes almost impossible to use. We spend a lot of time trying to maneuver through it, and sometimes we lose customers because we cannot reach them,” Twinamasiko said.
Emmanuel Rwankyenga, a resident of Butobere Ward, echoed similar concerns, noting that the situation has led to frequent accidents.
“We have seen many accidents here involving both riders and pedestrians. The road is too dangerous, especially when it rains. It needs urgent attention,” he said.
Other residents, including Brair Ankunda from Nyakagyera and businessman Brian Namanya from Nyabushabi Trading Centre, said the deteriorating road is affecting trade in the area.
“Transporting goods has become very expensive and difficult. Vehicles often get stuck, and this delays business. We are losing money because of the poor state of this road,” Namanya explained.
Due to the poor condition of the main road, road users have been forced to use an alternative steep route near Kigezi College Butobere. However, they say this route is also risky and unsuitable, particularly for motorcycles and heavy trucks.
Residents further noted that despite repeated complaints, the road has remained in a deplorable state. They accused local leaders of only carrying out temporary repairs that do not offer lasting solutions.
“Leaders come and try to fix a few sections, but the repairs don’t last. We need a permanent solution from the government,” Ankunda added.
They also expressed frustration that government officials from Rukiga District frequently use the same road but have not taken adequate steps to address the issue.
The community is now calling on the government to urgently rehabilitate the road to prevent further accidents and economic losses.
In response, Eng. Alison Abenabo Twine, Station Manager at Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) in Kabale, acknowledged the concerns and assured residents that action is being planned.
“We are aware of the current condition of the Kabale–Mparo road. A technical team has already conducted an assessment, and plans are underway to begin rehabilitation works,” Eng. Twine said.
He added that the works are expected to commence in the next government quarter.
“We ask the public to remain patient as we finalize the necessary processes. The road will be worked on to improve accessibility and safety,” he added.
Despite this assurance, residents insist that urgent intervention is needed to restore the road and ease transport challenges in the area.
