KISORO – Residents of Gasenyi Village in Mabungo Parish, Nyarusiza Sub-County, Kisoro District, are in shock following a tragic domestic incident in which a man was allegedly killed by his wife after a violent altercation.

The deceased has been identified as Bosco Rurakabije, a man believed to have been in his 40s. The incident reportedly occurred on the night of Monday, April 6, sending fear and disbelief across the community.

Preliminary reports indicate that Rurakabije was allegedly attacked and killed by his wife, Juliet Nyiraguhirwa, who is currently on the run. The incident is suspected to have stemmed from a long history of domestic violence in the household.

According to Bosco’s biological brother, Bizimana Alisen, he was alerted early in the morning by the deceased’s son.

“I received a call from the boy very early in the morning. When I reached here, I found my brother already dead with deep cuts on his body.”

Bizimana further revealed that the couple had been involved in frequent domestic disputes, often worsened by alcohol abuse.

“They have been having misunderstandings for a long time. There was too much fighting and drinking, and we had started getting worried as a family,”

The couple’s 15-year-old son, Irakiza Fabiano, who reportedly witnessed the incident, narrated that the fight broke out shortly after his father returned home at night.

“They started fighting immediately when my father came back home. It was not the first time. They have been fighting.”

Fabiano claims that during the struggle, his mother overpowered his father and used a knife that had allegedly been brought by the deceased.

“My mother took the knife and stabbed him. He fell immediately and stopped moving.” He added that his father had previously threatened his mother, especially during drunken confrontations.

“My father used to threaten to kill my mother whenever they fought, especially at night.” Despite the tragedy, the young boy appealed to authorities to show leniency towards his mother.

“I ask the authorities to forgive my mother. I don’t think she intended to kill him. We also need support as a family.”

The couple’s daughter, Mukandayisanga Gloria, also confirmed that tensions in the home had escalated days before the incident.

“On Easter Sunday, our father came back drunk and threatened to kill our mother. Things have not been peaceful at home.”

Residents have expressed concern over rising cases of domestic violence in the area, linking them largely to excessive alcohol consumption.

“These cases are becoming too many. Alcohol is destroying families here, and leaders must intervene.”

The LC1 Chairman of Gasenyi Village, Munyanganizi Venansi, confirmed the incident and acknowledged the couple’s troubled history.

“This is a very unfortunate incident. The couple has had long-standing domestic conflicts, which we believe contributed to this tragedy.”

He added that local leaders are increasingly concerned about the growing number of domestic disputes.

“We are seeing more family conflicts, and alcohol is a major factor. As leaders, we are working on measures to regulate alcohol consumption and promote harmony in homes.”

Police in Kisoro District had launched investigations into the matter and were actively searching

for the suspect. The body of the deceased was taken to Kisoro Hospital for a postmortem examination.

Authorities are urging the public to seek peaceful ways of resolving domestic conflicts, as cases of violence within families continue to rise across communities.
