KABALE – Police in Kabale District have intensified investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officer, Sgt. Tumwesigye Robert.

Sgt. Tumwesigye, service number RA/185408, was attached to the 2nd Division and deployed at the Mukokye border in Maziba sub-county, Kabale District, where he served as an intelligence officer. His lifeless body was discovered lying on his bed at his residence in Mukokye on Tuesday morning, raising concerns among residents and security officials.

The incident was reported by the area chairperson, Christopher Nkaneziyo, at Maziba Police Station after members of the community became suspicious of the officer’s prolonged absence.

A team of police officers from Kabale District, including scene of crime personnel, responded promptly to the report, visited and documented the scene thoroughly before the body was conveyed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.

Preliminary findings indicate that Sgt. Tumwesigye had been missing for the past five days before the discovery of his body. According to available information, he had been living alone at the residence where he was found, and his absence had not immediately raised alarm until neighbours noticed unusual silence at his home.

The Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed the incident and said investigations were ongoing to find the exact cause and circumstances surrounding the officer’s death. He explained that the scene was properly examined and documented by investigators, and that findings from the postmortem will play a critical role in guiding the next course of action.

Maate further noted that detectives were in touch with relevant witnesses, including residents and local leaders, to piece together the deceased’s last movements before his disappearance. He added that both police and UPDF authorities are working closely to ensure that all possible leads are followed.

He also urged members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by volunteering any information that could assist in the investigations. Authorities have emphasised that no conclusions will be made until all forensic and investigative procedures are completed.

The death of the officer has sparked concern within the local community, with residents calling for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish what could have led to the untimely death of the soldier.
