MASINDI – Traders and residents in Masindi Municipality have witnessed a major crackdown on illegal structures as authorities launch an operation to restore trade order in the town. The exercise, which began on Monday, saw several permanent and semi-permanent structures within the central business area demolished. Kiosks and shades constructed in front of houses were also removed, with all demolished items taken to the municipal headquarters.
Some traders expressed concern over the impact on their livelihoods. Julian Nsungwa, a trader operating opposite Masindi central market, said the operation would negatively affect their businesses. Gilbert Balikagira questioned why they were being evicted despite paying taxes and operation licenses to the municipality. Joyce Asiimwe added that traders should have been given more time to prepare, while Godwine Tibasiima warned that demolishing business structures could render many jobless.
However, many residents welcomed the operation, saying it was long overdue. Rogers Kwikiriza, a resident, stated that having an organized town is essential for smooth trade and movement. Patrick Asiimwe, the acting Deputy Town Clerk of Masindi Municipality, explained that the business environment had become too disorganized due to illegal and unplanned structures.
“The major aim of demolishing the illegal structures is to restore trade order,” he said. He added that the exercise seeks to reduce congestion, ensure abandoned markets and structures are properly utilized, and streamline business operations. Daniel Kasala, the Masindi Municipality Town Clerk, emphasized that the operation is about enforcing trade order and that there will be no compromise.
“We have given people ample time to prepare themselves, but most of them have adamantly defied our directives. You find buyers without anywhere to park. The operation is being carried out according to rules and regulations,” he said. Kasala noted that the exercise is continuous until order is fully restored in Masindi town and warned that anyone who does not comply will be arrested and prosecuted.
