Residents in Soroti District are calling for an independent investigation into the recent death of a suspect in police custody at Katine Central Police Station (CPS). The demand follows the death of Sam Emong, who was arrested on the evening of Monday, March 9, 2026, on alleged murder charges by Katine Police.
Leaders from Agago and Kotido districts have collaborated to rescue more than 274 school-going girls who had migrated to Agago in search of food and casual labour. The girls, aged 5 to 16, were scattered across several sub-counties, including Lapirin, Adani, Odokomit, and Acuru, where they worked in gardens in exchange for food or small payments. According to local leaders, the children, mainly from Rikitia and Lodera villages in Panyagara Sub-county, in Kotido, were hired to dig gardens for about 4,000 shillings per day, and in some cases, they were paid in sorghum.
The Ministry of Water and Environment, SW Uganda region, has launched a weeklong series of events leading up to Water and Environment Week, which will take place from 23rd to 27th March 2026. The Regional office will host the annual water and environment week from 16th to 19th March in Mbarara City and neighbouring districts and towns, bringing together policymakers, the private sector, civil society organisations, academia, local communities, well-wishers, and friends of the water and environment sector.
A cross-section of traders in Kampala are counting losses after fire gutted Katwe market and burnt their merchandise worth millions to ashes. The fire that started in the wee hours of Monday morning from what is believed to be an electrical fault left the livelihoods of traders disfigured. Police had not yet communicated on the incident by the time this update was made.
Roadside and street vendors in Fort Portal City have been given only five days by city authorities to vacate the streets or be forcefully evicted. According to authorities, the directive starts biting on Monday, 16th March, and the traders should take heed of it. The directives come about after the March 5th order by the city clerk who asked all vendors in unregulated spaces to vacate before 15th March.
Three people, including school children, died in a crash on the Mpala section along the Kampala-Entebbe expressway when a vehicle believed to be travelling from Masaka to Entebbe International Airport lost control. The driver reportedly dozed off and ended up losing control of the vehicle, killing three occupants at the scene and injuring one.

A fifth member of the Iranian women’s soccer team has withdrawn her claim for asylum in Australia, Australian media reported on Monday, and will be rejoining the rest of the squad in Malaysia. The latest withdrawal leaves only two people of the original six players and one support staff member who sought asylum in Australia last week fearing possible persecution if they returned home.
