KABALE – The President of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni Tibuhaburwa, was the chief guest at the 45th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations held at National Teachers College Kabale in Kabale Municipality on Friday 6th February 6, 2026.

The Commander in Chief of the armed forces of Uganda was accompanied by his wife, Janet Kataaha Museveni, who is the Minister of Education and Sports, and the pair first commissioned a FRONASA monument at Kabale Stadium in honour of people who were killed by firing on orders of former President, Idi Amin Dada.

As he delivered his speech at the ceremony to remember the beginning of the 1981 liberation struggle, President Museveni said that Kigezi sub-region where the celebrations were held is very rich and could get richer if they listen to the advice of the ruling government, adding that Uganda’s economy is growing very fast with the government targeting to become highly middle income country in a few years.

“Here in Kigezi, you have a very strong economy around tourism, commercial agriculture and manufacturing as the basis of growth. Although the land is fragmented, it can be very productive with the right enterprises. But we need to include the use of fertilisers and irrigation. We must have irrigation and the use of fertilisers in the whole of Uganda, including the Kigezi area. If you do that and we select high-value enterprises like fruits, coffee, and vegetables, we shall get good money from commercial agriculture, “the President told the people of Kigezi.

The President-elect revealed that Kigezi has the best iron ore in the whole world, and investors have already been attracted to the area.

“For the case of the Kigezi area, we also have minerals. The best iron ore in the whole world is here in Rubanda, Muko, Butogota. We have hematite iron ore. This is the best in the whole world. We have attracted investors who are going to build a factory here, and I need land quickly. I don’t want stories. I told these people the land I need, and I don’t need stories; I need land in the Rubanda area.” He noted

Also revealing that he has “told those involved to put one factory,” the President explained that the factory for which he needs land will upgrade iron ore to 62% as he plans to build another factory in Tororo.

“Uganda will be the biggest producer of steel in the world because we have very good iron ore. We have more than 500 million tons. Even if we use one million tons per year, it will take us 500 years to finish the iron ore that is here. It is a lot of wealth.” He said

He further highlighted the government’s plans to build airports in Kabale and Mbarara to tap into the tourism and commercial agricultural opportunities in Kigezi and Ankole.

“So, we are improving the infrastructure, we are building the tourism roads, tarmacking them to link these areas very easily for travel. But we are also going to expand Kisoro Airport so that the tourists fly in and they don’t have to drive all the way from Entebbe. We are also going to build another huge airport in Mbarara. Bigger than even Entebbe.” He explained, adding, “The one in Mbarara is mainly for the trade between South America and China. Apparently, that area is the central point between China and South America. So, this area is going to develop around tourism. It is already developing, but it will develop even more.”

He also saluted the Uganda People’s Defence Forces and other security forces for the robust security they provided during the recent elections.

The Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, congratulated the people of Uganda upon “peacefully exercising their democratic right in the just concluded presidential, parliamentary and local council elections.”

“The people of Uganda have indeed vindicated themselves very well. It is also comforting that, save for a few isolated cases, security was observed in most parts of the country throughout the whole process. Voters went about the business of electing their leaders in a serene, calm and secure environment. As a consequence, the 2026 general elections are already being called the most peaceful elections on record,” he said

The event was attended by senior and junior officers from security organisations, security bosses and allies from neighbouring countries, government ministers and heads of agencies, Members of Parliament, National Resistance Movement leaders, former leaders, etc.
