UCC lifts internet restrictions

MBARARA – The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has on 26th January 26, 2026 announced “full restoration of internet services” across the country, allowing Ugandans to access online services without limitations.
The regulator on Monday confirmed that connectivity had returned to normal, allowing citizens to use social media, messaging platforms, and other online services freely.
The announcement followed Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s X post in which he told the country via his X account that they were “releasing social media today.”
The restoration of services marks the end of close to two weeks of restricted online access that had affected communication, business operations, and social interaction across Uganda as the country went to parliamentary and presidential polls.
UCC said the internet was temporarily suspended to prevent possible misinformation and disinformation during the election period.
During the downtime, many businesses, students, and professionals faced challenges in conducting their daily activities online.
Analysts argue that unrestricted internet access is essential for the economy, particularly for small businesses, digital entrepreneurs, and the tech industry, which rely heavily on stable connectivity for their operations and transactions.
The lifting of restrictions is expected to revive online commerce, restore digital communication channels and allow people to stay connected with friends, family, and global news. Educational institutions and remote learners are also likely to benefit, as access to online resources is no longer limited.
UCC has urged the public to continue using internet services responsibly, emphasising that the restored connectivity will support personal, educational, and professional activities. The commission also encouraged internet users to report any disruptions to ensure the network remains stable.
The announcement underscores Uganda’s ongoing efforts to ensure reliable and unrestricted digital services for its citizens, a step seen as vital for both civic engagement and economic growth in the country.
