SHEEMA – On Thursday afternoon, a video clip featuring Ms Asiimwe circulated on social media, indicating that the commissioner had been arrested in Buhweju District, reportedly bribing residents to vote for an undisclosed candidate in the Buhweju District Chairman race.
The Buhweju race was between the incumbent Chairperson, Mr Deo Atuhaire (NRM) and the independent candidate, Mr Phillip Muhamya.
Unconfirmed reports accused Ms Asiimwe of distributing money on behalf of the NRM flag bearer, Mr Atuhaire. Tayari News could not independently verify the authenticity of these reports, though.
Ms Asiimwe, however, refuted the allegations, saying she was being framed. According to Ms Asiimwe, the citizens received misleading reports that she was distributing money, and they came to her, yet she was going about her duties.
“I have been informed that there is a video circulating in Buhweju. Disregard that information. I am being framed. I was in Nyakambu trading centre, which borders Sheema and Buhweju. Communities cross and stay together. Where I was seen in the video, I had entered the shop to buy a bottle of water.” She said
Asiimwe said that her movements were mistakenly misinterpreted by excited residents who thought government officials were giving them money to vote for the NRM flag bearers.
“You know the election mood has a lot of suspicion, and the tensions are high with some candidates and voters. Someone recorded a video and said I was arrested, but that’s not true.”She clarified
“My duty station and area of operation is Sheema district, and that’s where I spent the whole day going about my duties. Reports indicating that I was in Buhweju district are false and should be treated and disregarded with utmost contempt,” Asiimwe added.
A Buhweju- based security operative who preferred anonymity because he was not a government spokesperson told this publication that Ms Asiimwe was a victim of the election period mood swings.
“You know, these days, wherever the local people see a government vehicle, they think that there is eating. I think when they saw Asiimwe, they came because they knew she was an RDC. The Nyakambu trading centre is full of people from Buhweju. So, I think it is just a rumour, ” he said
