FORT PORTAL – The Director of Operations of the Uganda Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Frank Mwesigwa, has assured the public that security has been heightened to ensure peace and safety as the country prepares for the general elections.

AIGP Mwesigwa made the remarks while addressing journalists at the Kabarole District Headquarters in Kitumba, after a closed-door security meeting involving security chiefs from Fort Portal City, Mbarara City, and Hoima City on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.

The meeting focused on security preparations ahead of the elections, including identifying cities and districts that could potentially experience unrest during the electoral period, as well as assessing key road networks to enhance security deployment.

“As security, we have been marking different hotspots that might have violence during elections, especially the cities and today we are in Fort Portal meeting commanders from Mbarara city, Hoima city and Kasese district to discuss strategies of operation on 15th,” Mwesigwa said.

He further noted that security agencies have put in place coordinated plans to work jointly with other sister security organs to maintain peace during and after the elections.

“We have put measures in place in which our security forces will be doing patrols using cars, motorcycles and others walking in areas that we suspect to have violence, and we will also be working with our fellow sister security organs like UPDF, Prisons and UWA”, AIGP Mwesigwa notes.

Adding that security personnel have been increased, including the deployment of newly recruited officers serving as election special police constables, Mwesigwa guided on the deployment strategy that will be intelligence-led and density-based to maintain joint visibility in all the hotspot areas to mitigate any disruption attempts that will be treated as a security threat, not civil inconvenience.

He warned the public against engaging in activities that could disrupt peace during the election period.

Fort Portal City and Kabarole District in the Tooro sub-region, together with Kasese and Bundibugyo districts in the Rwenzori sub-region, are among the areas where security has been intensified.
