Opinion: Is poverty a curse?

Across generations and cultures, the question “Is poverty a curse?” continues to echo in the hearts of many. For those who endure its sting daily, poverty often feels like a dark shadow that follows them everywhere — a punishment or fate they cannot escape. But is it truly a curse, or a condition created by human systems and choices?

In reality, poverty is not a curse. It is a social and economic condition born from inequality, poor governance, unemployment, and limited access to education. It thrives where opportunities are scarce and justice is weak. Many families remain poor not because they are cursed, but because they are trapped in cycles of disadvantage and neglect.

Yet, the pain of poverty can indeed feel like a curse when one is surrounded by wealth but denied a fair share of it. It robs individuals of dignity, choice, and sometimes hope. Still, some rise above it — turning hardship into resilience, creativity, and purpose.

Religiously, poverty is not condemned as evil. Most faiths teach that wealth and poverty are both tests of human character. The rich are called to share, while the poor are reminded that true riches lie in faith, kindness, and perseverance.

Ultimately, poverty is not a curse but a challenge — one that society can overcome through compassion, education, and fair systems. When opportunity meets effort, the so-called “curse” of poverty can be broken, and the story rewritten.
